Is Your Rent Too High? This New Tool Lets You Check in Seconds
A new online simulator developed by Challenges in partnership with SeLoger and MeilleursAgents allows renters to quickly see how their rent compares with others in their neighborhood.
The tool is simple: you enter basic details about your apartment or house—such as the location, size, number of rooms, and monthly rent—and it estimates whether your rent is below, in line with, or above typical local prices.
Unlike many online calculators, the simulator provides results without requiring users to create an account or share personal information.
You can find the original article and the embedded tool here (about three-quarters of the way down the page):
Rent Ceilings Exist in Many French Cities
Understanding rent levels is especially important because many cities in France have rent ceilings (“encadrement des loyers”) designed to limit excessive rents.
In these areas, the law sets a maximum rent per square meter, depending on factors such as the location, size of the property, construction period, and number of rooms.
You can learn more about how rent ceilings work and which cities apply them here:

Because many renters are unsure how their rent compares with local limits or market prices, comparison tools like this simulator can provide a quick and useful first check.
A Quick Way to Understand Your Rent
The tool offers a fast and easy way to gauge whether your rent is typical for your area.
For renters wondering whether they might be paying too much—or simply curious about local market prices—it provides a helpful starting point in just a few seconds.
I personally checked my apartment in Rennes and it showed that I am about 5% above the market rate, which feels about right versus what I have been available in the neighborhood in Rennes.
